COLDSKY.CN – Gait recognition start-up Watrix AI Technology (银河水滴), incubated by the CAS Institute of Automation , has raised 100 million yuan in Series Pre-A round of financing.

The investors are Hengbang Capital(恒邦资本), Huahe Capital(华和资本) and Nanshan VC(南山创赛基金).

In comparison with the wide application and media hype of  face recognition, features associated with how people walk is certainly not a hot topic for the time being. The company’s website has highlighted an image from the 2015 American action spy film Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, to demonstrate the technology’s value.

Led by AI scientist Dr. Huang Yongzhen, Watrix’s logic is that gait features is capable of identifying targets from any angle regardless of if they cover their faces or wear different clothes or walk outside at night, without suspects being aware. With the world’s largest gait database, the company says the average recognition rate can reach 94.1%, much better than the second best result (less than 65%).

The company already markets a portable machine, weighing about 15 kilograms, to quickly spot suspects while they are walking. On March 23, it introduced the gait-face recognition cameras.
